fabio-de-poli-senza-titolo-2
Fabio De Poli - Untitled

The work draws on a pop aesthetic in its use of famous or mass-produced images and their mechanical reworking. Pop Art emerged in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and critique of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and mass media. On the one hand, as in this case, it is the artwork that is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. Or it is the mass-produced images that become works of art themselves, as a more genuine and truthful expression of the new society and thanks to the artist's recontextualization.

In this example of graphic design, it is very clear how Fabio De Poli's training as an advertising designer played a prominent role in developing his artistic language. Indeed, his entire production moves between Pop art and the New Dada recontextualization of mass-produced images or consumer objects. It is clear that, in this work, the former prevails in an image that bases its expressiveness precisely on the aggressive and seductive techniques of design and advertising language. The subject is defined by clean, simplified lines that construct a pared-down design in a two-dimensional space. Color plays a prominent role, characterized by highly electric hues that, standing out against the black background, give the work the definitive appearance of a neon sign. All this places Fabio De Poli's artistic practice at the center of the most interesting interpretations of Pop aesthetics in Italy, between the illuminations of Marco Lodola and the deconstructions of Ugo Nespolo.

Fabio De Poli was born in Genoa in 1947 and lives in Florence. In 1964, he attended the Art Institute of Florence, specializing in advertising graphics. Since 1968, he has participated in major art exhibitions. In the late 1960s, he debuted with a New Dada work, and in the early 1970s, he produced a series of works that Renato Barilli would define as "Rich Art." His works are held at the Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti, the Patronato Joan Miro in Barcelona, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna in Bologna, the Pecci Museum in Prato, the Franklin Museum in New York, and Palazzo Enasco in Rome.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/0a73f665-0446-45d7-8f2f-c7dc9bbb7731.jpg?v=1768469791
