fernando-masi-senza-titolo
Fernando Masi - Untitled

The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a subject that can be traced back to the aesthetics of late-nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, while using a primarily figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references. The subject, with four figures advancing through a decontextualized landscape, expresses a profound sense of solitude and undoubtedly implies existentialist reflections. The artist expresses his concerns about the lack of communication between people, even those closest to him.

This painting is part of a series in which Fernando Masi reveals a highly creative Symbolist and Expressionist streak. Iconographically, it's quite clear that we're dealing with a subject that doesn't claim to represent reality, but rather to convey hidden, underlying messages. While the interpretation recalls Symbolism, the execution of the painting further leans toward Expressionism, due to the remarkable synthesis of its interpretation. The subjects are delineated in a spare manner, while the application of color is gestural, at times reaching a heightened pictorial quality with highly expressive effects. Thus, the figures appear almost dematerialized within a two-dimensional surface, lending the work a visionary quality.

Fernando Masi was born in Irpinia, the fourth of five children. His father was a woodworker—he built carts, inlaid them, and painted them. It was during a stay in Siena, during the early years of his engagement to his wife, that a cousin, a painter and decorator, gave him his palette, noting his artistic talent and wishing him a successful future. With the help of his brother Michele, he opened a painting studio in Modena, which became his adopted city. From then on, Fernando Masi's artistic career officially began. A dynamic and multifaceted artist, the world of Formula 1 fascinated him, and he painted Ferraris and Grand Prix races. His work culminated in a major retrospective exhibition at the Galleria Ferrari in Maranello in 1990, which led to the nickname "The Painter of Ferrari."
