Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany. Francesco Jozzi's, however, is a more subdued and minimal expressionism, almost regressing to symbolism. Indeed, his representation of reality is completely disintegrated and the subjects take on a decidedly symbolist connotation, appearing and disappearing within the space of the work.

The style of painter Francesco Jozzi, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a lively and dramatic manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's emotion is also the protagonist, conveyed through his agitated gestures. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Francesco Jozzi's painting. This power is also based on a specific aesthetic choice that reaffirms the existential tone of his work, namely, that of leaning toward a pronounced color impasto from which the anonymous images emerge almost with difficulty, in their symbolic and spiritual colors, establishing a struggle with the pictorial material.

Francesco Jozzi is an artist from Catanzaro, born in 1952. In 1971, Jozzi took his first steps as an artist, painting plein air landscapes of his homeland. During these years, he developed his painting technique, but at the same time, he felt unable to express his true state of mind. Thus, he drew various characters that appeared in a layering of energetic brushstrokes. The freshness of Jozzi's work strongly impressed several collectors in Brescia, who in
In 1983, the Catanzaro-born artist held his first solo exhibition in the Lombardy city. Jozzi's art thus began to be appreciated by the most important figures in the contemporary art market of the time: in 1983, he participated in a group show in Spello alongside works by Achille Perilli and Emilio Scanavino. In April 2017, the artist's solo exhibition, titled "Dal fondo buio, il visibile e l'invisibile," was presented at the MARCA - Catanzaro Museum of Arts.

Rosetta Gallo pres.
