These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.

This graphic work by Francesco Menzio, formally speaking, displays a strong connection to pop aesthetics. Indeed, the figure and the space surrounding it are rendered with a concise and dry design that highlights the plastic qualities, clearly drawing on the language of comics or design. Menzio achieves this with a nimble and dynamic line that, while essential, lends liveliness and personality to the scene.

Francesco Menzio (Tempio Pausania, 1899 – Turin, 1979).
