francese-il-martirio-di-santagata
French School of the 18th Century - Martyrdom Scene

The subject of the work is quite controversial; it is most likely a martyrdom scene. In the main scene, in the central section of the work, to the dismay of onlookers, a torturer is seen stabbing a woman in the throat with a knife, while other bodies lie lifeless below. The staging is therefore typical of martyrdom, and indeed, the work has previously been identified as the martyrdom of Saint Agatha. In reality, the hagiographic tradition of the patron saint of Catania does not refer to a death by stabbing; rather, it seems the saint died in prison, agonizing from the wounds sustained during an attempt to burn her on a bed of burning coals. Instead, the legend surrounding another Sicilian saint makes a direct reference to jugulatio, that is, death by stabbing in the throat: the story of Saint Lucy. Indeed, although the Syracusan saint is remembered for the controversial iconographic tradition that refers to her eyes, in reality, not everyone knows that after various tortures, she died from a stab to the throat. There is a consistent iconographic tradition, evidenced by numerous works, that depicts the death of Saint Lucy in these terms. In relation to the painting under analysis, the only doubt arises from the fact that other lifeless bodies appear, while in the works of the cited tradition, Saint Lucy's torture does not include other martyrs. Therefore, in reality, our work could refer to a group martyrdom, although the suggestion of the legend of Saint Lucy remains strong precisely because of the explicit reference to death by jugulatio.

The beautiful canvas is composed according to a choral scene, highly dramatic and theatrical, in which the various characters express agitated emotions in a perfect system of balance and interconnected gestures. Indeed, the work has a very classical setting with a clear reference to a still Renaissance aesthetic. Indeed, despite the crowding, the scene is distributed in a decidedly harmonious and balanced manner. At the center, the main scene is constructed on a perfect diagonal line, so that, with the stabbed saint at the top, the lifeless body of the martyr, beautifully depicted in a foreshortened nude, is perfectly mirrored below. To our right is the group of three women and the child, intertwined in a precise harmony of gestures and positions. On the opposite side, a series of figures, beginning with the armored soldier, slopes naturally toward the background, while a colonnade allows a glimpse of the landscape. It is a type of composition that still harks back to Renaissance canons of beauty and harmony, as can be seen in the accentuated plasticity and monumentality of the figures, in the extremely naturalistic anatomical definition of the bodies, and in the sculptural volumes of the draperies. The use of light is also evocative and theatrical, almost leaving the entire scene in shadow, while directly illuminating the martyrs' bodies, which stand out in their whiteness (while leaving the torturer in darkness). Moreover, the use of color is also consistent with the artist's classical approach, with a perfect tonal coherence throughout the scene, ensuring atmospheric unity throughout the work.

The work has been attributed to an 18th-century French artist. From our stylistic analysis, we have observed that the artist possessed excellent pictorial technique and a classical aesthetic with clear references to the Renaissance tradition. There is no doubt, therefore, about the artist's solid academic training, evident in his ability to depict the volumes of the bodies and the plasticity of the draperies with great naturalistic rendering, as well as his skill in using light to measure space with great tonal coherence.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/61346603967__9F4AE60D-EE39-4074-BBAF-E85C6A8ED927-copia-scaled.jpg?v=1768429084
