franco-fontana-natura
Franco Fontana - Nature

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Landscape is also one of the most studied subjects by those who experiment with the art of photography: a case in point is Franco Fontana, who dedicated much of his production to this iconographic theme. This work is part of the series entitled "Nature."

Throughout his landscape photography, formal balance is the essential element of Franco Fontana's work. Balance, first and foremost, between composition and minimalism. The composition is always highly dynamic, built on a profound perspective and an ideal and harmonious dialogue between the foreground elements and the background, between sky and earth. The artist, in fact, depicts a large portion of landscape that fades naturally into the horizon, while the foreground elements are precisely captured. Franco Fontana frames his landscapes in a coherent and unified atmosphere. This coherence is often achieved through vibrant polychromes, while here the artist relies on the almost monochrome expressiveness of black and white. This entire quest for harmony contributes to the minimalist aesthetic, made of pure and essential lines that distinguish Franco Fontana's photographs. Nature itself is made of beauty and formal balance; it is up to the artist to capture this beauty through his sensitivity and capture it in the photograph.

Franco Fontana is one of the most internationally renowned contemporary Italian photographers.
