g-mastellaro-macchiette-nel-paese
Giuseppe Mastellaro - Sketches in the Park

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Giuseppe Mastellaro's pictorial production is imbued with an intimate sense of the everyday. He is an artist who, in his paintings, seeks to express the poetry of life in everything that appears before his eyes: whether it is a lyrical countryside view or a scene from everyday life.

This work is truly exemplary of the complex pictorial language developed by Giuseppe Mastellaro during the most expressionist phase of his career. In this scene drawn from everyday life, he completely dismantles the framework of drawing, allowing complete freedom to the expressive potential of color. Thus, the figures are synthesized through a decidedly structural approach, constructed with broad, brief strokes of paint. His is a spot-painting technique, which, in addition to conveying immediacy in execution, imbues the work with intense emotional and poetic vibrations. This painting by Giuseppe Mastellaro presents itself as a true polychrome mosaic, shaped by the artist's ability to express his most intimate perception of reality through color. The entire surface of the canvas is unified by dominant shades of green which, with a studied harmony, evoke the most lyrical sensations of a stroll in the park.

Giuseppe Mastellaro was a painter originally from Piove di Sacco, born in 1903 and died in 1981. He moved to Sesto San Giovanni both because he was persecuted by the Piovese fascists and to work at Breda, well aware that the Lombardy capital offered far greater opportunities and possibilities, even in the field of artistic activity. It was here that Mastellaro, taking to heart the lessons of Da Molin, attempted to capture the expressions and traits of a humanity confronting everyday life. He carefully sought out the facial features of characters he encountered on the street and found particularly interesting, or drew inspiration from the landscapes, the majesty of Milan's streets and squares, with perspectives that enhanced the architecture. He returned, as he would increasingly do after the 1960s and 1970s, to his hometown of Piove, to Chioggia, and Comacchio, where he created views in which he immersed himself completely, capturing on canvas their intimacy and even almost the smells of the place. This shy and retiring working-class artist, who did not come from the Academies, was awarded a gold medal by President Sandro Pertini in 1976 for his artistic merits.
