giacinto-cargnoni-la-raccolta-delle-ciliegie
Giacinto Cargnoni - The cherry harvest

The subject of this graphic work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.

A master of graphic and engraving techniques, artist Giacinto Cargnoni displays a remarkable drawing technique. Scenes are inserted within a coherent spatial box, in which the more distant elements in the background gently fade into the atmosphere. The artist's skill in capturing even the smallest details in a lively, dynamic narrative is remarkable (the tree trunk in the center suggests a rotating motion around which all the other elements of the composition are arranged). The final result is a composition of refined, miniature precision that leverages an extraordinary hatching technique. The rapidity of the strokes ensures a freshness of execution while simultaneously distributing the shadows and lights that define the space.

Born in Brescia in 1932, Giacinto Cargnoni has been a prominent figure in the Brescia art scene for over fifty years. After teaching for thirty years in local schools, in 1982 he devoted himself entirely to painting, having also learned the technique of graphic art (etching and aquatint). His works have been exhibited in solo and group shows in many Italian cities and abroad, including Brescia, Bergamo, Milan, Cremona, Marina di Carrara, Mantua, Modena, Trento, Palermo, Marsala, Modica, Enschede (Netherlands), and Belén (Brazil). Among the major graphic design prizes and exhibitions in which he has participated are: the Sassoferrato Prize, the Lario-Cadorago Prize, the Santhià Exhibition, the Acqui Terme Engraving Biennial, the Cavaion Veronese Biennial, the Gaiarine Biennial, the Leonardo Sciascia Traveling Exhibition, the Campobasso Biennial, the Bodio-Lomnago and Soncino Exlibris Exhibitions, and the Homage to Dante and the Divine Comedy organized by the S.
