giancarlo-amurri-senza-titolo-2
Giancarlo Amurri - Sunset on the Adda River

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

Giancarlo Amurri's style is rooted in the quality of his subjects, always drawn from a countryside to which the artist feels a strong connection. For this reason, the images that come from his senses or his memory are always extremely concrete, with a tangible realism. Indeed, compositionally, Giancarlo Amurri's works are always based on a solid drawing structure in which the contours are defined by a clear black line. In this way, the objects acquire a strong plastic structure that determines their concreteness and clarity. As for the pictorial application, the artist imbues these real presences with life through a highly complex and dynamic treatment of color, which at times leads to a textured, spatula-like distribution. Furthermore, the chromatic coherence of Giancarlo Amurri's works is extraordinary, always based on tonal gradations between green and dark yellow, which convey the poetry of an existence connected to the earth and the warmth of the sun. The union that occurs in Giancarlo Amurri, between the concreteness of the structures and the solidity of the dense, material color in a painting aimed at the authenticity of a rural world, reveals a strong inspiration from the French painter Paul Cézanne.

Giancarlo Amurri was born in Monterubbiano in 1929.
