gianmarco-corrias-jimenez-vaso-di-fiori-2
Gianmarco Corrias Jimenez - Vase of Flowers

Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality. The "Vase of Flowers" is one of the most recurring subjects in the work of Sardinian artist Gianmaria Corrias Jimenez, of which he created several versions to develop his own expressionist style.

Gianmarco Corrias Jimenez's pictorial language relies primarily on the expressive qualities of color. The drawing structure and perspective grid are completely dismantled to make way for the force of the brushstrokes. Indeed, the vigor with which Jimenez creates his works is such that it verges on the gesturality typical of Abstract Expressionism. However, Jimenez remains firmly anchored in phenomenological reality, because even with the diluted color of watercolor, he manages to delineate the essence of the vase of flowers, lending it expressive vigor. In this work, however, we note an accentuation of Expressionist synthesis. The brushstrokes broaden, and the subject takes on, by the painter's intention, an even more summary and iconic aspect, in an interpretation that we might truly describe as gestural. In this Expressionist context, as is typical of Gianmarco Corrias Jimenez, color takes on almost neutral tones. The meaning of color, in fact, goes far beyond naturalism and takes on a highly symbolic, evocative, and spiritual significance.

Gianmarco Corrias Jimenez, Sassari 1941-1999.
