gio-acqua-marina
Giò Locatelli - Sea Water

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the Classical era, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. Much of Giò Locatelli's sculptural production focuses on the human figure, and one of his favorite subjects is lovers united in a passionate embrace.

The sculpture in question displays a very vigorous style of modeling. The two figures are sculpted with an extremely concrete plasticity that enhances their volumes by enlarging them. The sculptor's strong expressionist intent is evident in the generalization of the physiognomic and anatomical features, which appear square, almost roughly sketched. All this makes the surfaces of the subjects extremely vibrant, alive with a profound existential energy. Compositionally, all this energy is reflected in the elaboration of an embrace, resolved, plastically, in the fusion of the two figures in the same material.

Giovanni Locatelli, known as Giò, was a sculptor from Osio Sopra, born in 1947 and passed away in 2016.
