giuseppe-canizzaro-equilibrio
Giuseppe Cannizzaro - Balance

The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, which led to the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their exploration focuses instead on the materials from which their works are composed.

In his versatile research and multifaceted artistic production, Giuseppe Cannizzaro has explored various expressive languages within the abstract and informal realms. In this painting, the artist reaches a pinnacle of experimentation, decisively abandoning all contact with sensory reality, creating a concrete work of pure abstraction. The work is entirely resolved through the artist's gestures. Indeed, its surface is completely monochrome, set in a deep, dynamic blue. The paint, however, is dense and full-bodied, allowing the artist to layer symbolic elements on the surface. This creates a system of signs that is hermetic and mysterious in its insubstantiality, yet powerfully expressive in its incommunicability. This aura of mystery is further fueled by the subtle presence of the geometry of the circle and the triangle, which, only with a careful reading, can be discerned, just like apparitions on the blue surface.

Giuseppe Cannizzaro was born in Acquaro in 1910 and passed away in 2007. Always driven by a libertarian spirit and eager to experiment with different forms of expression, he was also a renowned poet. His painting education, self-taught but in line with the contemporary avant-garde, took place primarily in Rome, where he joined the "Numero" group. It was in this context that he established himself, participating in numerous exhibitions, including international ones (London, New York, Boston, Damascus, Hamburg, Copenhagen). In 1967, he founded the secret art studio "Il Cacco," protesting the consumerism of expression and the art market, and Lo Specillo, a satirical magazine of the figurative arts. In 2003, he was appointed a full member of the historic "Accademia Tiberina di Roma" and the "Accademia della Legion d'Oro di Roma." His works are found in public and private galleries, in Italy and abroad. In May 2006, a Permanent Museum Exhibition was inaugurated at Palazzo Nieddu del Rio in Locri, retracing Giuseppe Cannizzaro's entire career through works donated by the artist.
