giuseppe-ciavolino-la-camerierina
Giuseppe Ciavolino - The waitress

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

This work is a typical example of Giuseppe Ciavolino's pictorial output. In this painter's work, female portraiture draws on elegant influences from the past, from the Renaissance to the Baroque. These influences are reworked and recontextualized by the artist in a way that makes his subjects even more magical and imaginative. Giuseppe Ciavolino's expressive medium is the pictorial layering, which constructs a complex, multidimensional space. The artist also creates flamboyant clothing and eclectic hairstyles, and with his brushstrokes, he expressively deforms the figures, elongating and tapering them, adapting to the harmonious rhythm of the entire composition.

Giuseppe Ciavolino was born in Torre del Greco in 1918. He graduated from art high school and the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. From the early 1930s, he attended the old Scuola del Corallo, a student of Taverna, Palomba, and Noto. Ciavolino is a painter with a European influence; his work draws on chromatic tints that retain all the warmth of the Mediterranean. A renowned and authentic artist, well-known among art lovers for his notable works engraved in coral and cameos, he participated in various editions of the "Festa dei 4 Altari," creating painted altars, carpets, and lighting designs for the festival. Between 1972 and 1982, he designed eight triumphal floats for the Immaculate Conception. In the Basilica of Santa Croce, on the pillars, there are sixteen canvases depicting the "Via Crucis," examples of modern figurative art with a solid compositional structure and a strong chromatic vivacity. He passed away in his home in Torre del Greco in October 2011.
