giuseppe-guzzardi-bambina-assorta-con-bambola
Giuseppe Guzzardi - Little Girl Absorbed with a Doll

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

In this painting, Giuseppe Guzzardi demonstrates remarkable pictorial technique, allowing him to render this portrait perfectly in a naturalistic manner. The subject appears with a slight and natural twist, and there is great precision and richness of physiognomic detail in a pared-down portrait that focuses all attention on the child's personality. In addition to this meticulous study of character, the painter also stands out for his loose brushstrokes, creating a delicate softness in the modeling. The subject's forms blend seamlessly with the decontextualized space of the background. The use of light, enhancing the sculptural consistency of the forms, is highly skilled. The light comes from the left, leaving the area to the right of the face in shadow. The demeanor and the simple, innocent expression tell us much about the existential nature of this painting, further confirmed by the dynamic, vibrant pictorial style.

Giuseppe Guzzardi (Adrano 1845-Florence 1914). At a very young age, he received an encouragement award from the municipality of his native town. He attended the Academy of Florence, feeling the influence of Ciseri. In 1876, he made his debut at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence with the Virgin on Golgotha. He painted other hagiographical subjects, closely following his master. He soon distanced himself from that school, to pursue his own path. In 1877, he exhibited Campestre Idillio at the Promotrice, which was immediately purchased by the Borg de Balzan Gallery in Florence. To satisfy the numerous requests coming in from all over, the artist had to repeat the subject of the painting 14 times. His works are at GAM (Melbourne), Chiesa Madre (Adrano). In the Mother Church in Adrano (CT), in the chapel of the Sacred Heart, the works The Magdalene and the Apparition of Christ are visible. Worthy of mention are the artistic events in honor of Giuseppe Guzzardi (Adrano, 20-31 October 1985).
