giuseppe-marchese-senza-titolo
Giuseppe Marchese - Untitled

We are faced with a work that depicts a lagoon landscape. The artist, Giuseppe Marchese, a native of Palermo, often draws inspiration from the coasts surrounding Sicily, but especially from his city itself. Here too, from the formation of the mountains, we can see that we are directly facing the Gulf of Palermo. The artist creates a consciously balanced scene between the various levels, houses, sea, hills, and sky, to enhance the overall harmony.

The artist expresses himself with a pictorial language reminiscent of early Expressionism, where colors become too intense to be true. He uses real colors, not emotionally driven ones, to the point of exaggeration. The Palermo-born artist is characterized by a dense, mellow touch when depicting light reflecting on the sea. The entire work is imbued with warm, soft colors, conveying the sensation of feeling one's skin warmed by the last rays of the sun before sunset.

Giuseppe Marchese was born in Palermo in 1938. When he participated in his first group exhibition, he was only 12 years old, which indicates that from a very young age he was driven by a creative force to create works. This was followed by a period of training during which he frequented the painters Guadagno, Manzella, Mirabella, and Giambecchina. Broadening his horizons, he also encountered some of the greatest painters of the 20th century in Italy, such as Annigoni, Fiume, Guttuso, and Migneco, drawing particular attention to the latter. The artist passed away in 2010. Throughout his career, he experimented with a wide variety of techniques, from oil painting to acrylics, from watercolor to mixed media, from murals to etching. He exhibited his works in important national and international exhibitions. His artistic career was marked by a transition from an expressionist artistic language, inspired by a Fauvist line of aggressive colors, to a figurative plasticism in which the human figure takes center stage.
