guido-aloise-dittico-volti
Guido Aloise - Diptych of Faces

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This pair of portraits is highly illustrative of Guido Aloise's artistic language. The artist always straddles the line between unfiltered realism and a kind of idealizing symbolism. If the subject, as is typical in Aloise's art, is a character drawn from everyday life, the painter, in portraying it, exerts anti-naturalistic forces that simplify the figure, making it more iconic and symbolic. In these two portraits, Aloise uses a very light line, full of nuances that lend dynamism to the surface of the work. The artist's skill and the refinement of his perception are evident when, with a few stylized strokes, he manages to convey a subject with their own physiognomy and personality into the painting. The lines are essential, and the slightly dynamic application of color characterizes the depiction of subtle existential vibrations.

Guido Aloise was born in Fiumefreddo, Calabria, in 1925 and died in Rome in 1986.
