henri-goetz-senza-titolo
Henri Goetz - Untitled

The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and pure colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.

The engraving clearly demonstrates the distinctive features of Henri Goetz's artistic language. His aesthetic is clearly abstract, yet clearly influenced by Surrealism. Indeed, the figuration is rigorously mechanomorphic, constructed geometrically from pure forms and pure colors. Yet one senses that what has been geometrically reconstructed belongs to an otherworldly dimension. We are faced with a supernatural rocky landscape, perhaps belonging to another planet.

Born in New York in 1909, Henri Goetz became a naturalized French citizen in 1949. He trained in Paris, where he frequented Arp, Picasso, Picabia, Hartung, and Kandinsky. He began engraving in 1940 and experimented with new processes such as carborundum (1970). He was greatly influenced by Surrealism; his entire work is pervaded by a fantastical vein. He illustrated many works and was the protagonist of numerous solo exhibitions, including the one in Paris. His paintings were mainly abstract. He died in Nice in 1989.
