ilario-rossi-senza-titolo
Ilario Rossi - Untitled

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consisted of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with naturalistic or photographic reproductions of reality, with contemporary art, the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. This composition of musical instruments is a photolithograph from a portfolio titled "Della beltà immagine," composed of a work by Ilario Rossi and a poem by Mario Gorini.

Even in the composition of this still life, we can find the fundamental principle underlying Ilario Rossi's poetics: the desire to reach the purest essence of things. However, whereas in his landscapes this desire was combined with a preservation of formal, almost figurative values, in this work, Ilario Rossi instead strives for synthesis and abstraction. The objects' form is indicated only by an elegant black line, while their substance is resolved in a dynamic and iridescent pictorial impasto of acidic, expressionist colors. The artist's gestures are highly agitated and demonstrate a marked departure from the minimalist delicacy that characterizes this painter's landscapes.

Ilario Rossi was a Bolognese painter and printmaker, born in 1911 and died in 1994. He learned his passion and the rudiments of drawing from his father Ferdinando, a wood sculptor and art school teacher. His education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna, where he studied engraving under Giorgio Morandi, was crucial. He had a prolific career and exhibited his work at numerous events. He participated in several editions of the Venice Biennale and International Art Exhibition, and the Rome Quadrennial.
