The sculpture was commissioned by the Autonomous Consortium of the Port of Genoa and completed in 1990. It is on display in the gardens of Genoa Airport.

The compositional concept of Gino Giannetti's Columbus Monument, which this scale replica perfectly reproduces, is based on a seamless blend of classicism and modernity. While the structure of the work recalls the ancient historiated columns of Roman art, its form, reminiscent of sails and navigation, introduces a decidedly contemporary aesthetic. This dualism is also respected in the execution. Gino Giannetti draws on a classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. As we can see, he pursues a completely naturalistic rendering, achieved through remarkable technique. The artist has succeeded in emphasizing the subjects' volumes, creating a balanced relationship within the work and within a limited space. The physiognomies are highly precise, with a certain idealization. However, there is also a certain expressionistic synthesis that decisively reaffirms the modern character of this work.

Gino Giannetti was born in Montorio Romano in 1951. He made his debut in the 1970s as an expressionist painter, and began working on sculpture before the end of the decade. Giannetti's formative career as a sculptor began with an exploration of early sculpture: he created figures in wood and stone, sketched out in a primitive plastic form, which he exhibited in his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Bateau Lavoir in Rome in 1981. At the turn of the 1980s, having become a student of Pericle Fazzini, he completed his training by sharing with his master the basic principles of artistic practice: fidelity to the figurative ideal, reinterpreted from time to time, and the acquisition of refined technical expertise to achieve it. In 1983, he exhibited in two solo exhibitions, at the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia and at Palazzo Valentini in Rome.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/Monumento-a-Colombo-04-Vela-3-scaled.jpg?v=1768470924
https://cjfh11-ee.myshopify.com/en/products/istituto-poligrafico-della-zecca-dello-stato-monumento-a-colombo
