ivan-dimitrov-bologna-san-giovanni-in-monte
Ivan Dimitrov - Bologna - San Giovanni in Monte

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Modern Ages, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. Much of Ivan Dimitrov's sculptural output focuses on his adopted city, Bologna. In his bas-reliefs, Dimitrov depicts evocative views of the Emilian capital, creating beautiful plays of perspective through its characteristic porticoed streets.

The connection between Ivan Dimitrov's sculptures and the city of Bologna is evident not only in his choice of subject matter, but also in his technique. Bologna boasts an illustrious tradition of terracotta sculpture, dating back to the 14th century. Dimitrov forges a connection with the history of his city by depicting it in his bas-reliefs. Formally, his sculptures demonstrate an excellent technique in photographically capturing every detail. Dimitrov's mastery lies, above all, in creating perfect perspective settings through relief. The color of the panel also plays a crucial role, as the realistic depiction of the view is further enhanced by the artist's interplay of light and shadow.

Ivan Dimitrov is a Bulgarian sculptor born in Dupniza in 1958. He trained in Bologna, where he has always lived and worked. His first solo exhibition was in 1982, followed by exhibitions of his works at Palazzo Re Enzo (1993 and 1996), Palazzo Isolani (1994 and 1995), and the Baraccano museum complex (1998, 1999, 2005). His works include a series of terracotta bas-reliefs dedicated to Bologna and its nativity scenes, some of which pay homage to the great masters of art history (Leonardo, Bruegel, Dürer, Rembrandt, Rubens). In 2014, Ivan Dimitrov was commissioned by the Municipality of Siena to paint the Drappellone for the Palio of August 16, dedicated to Mario Luzi. The Drappellone is now preserved in the Museum of the Contrada della Civetta, winner of the Palio.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/Schermata-2021-01-05-alle-17.09.32-copia.png?v=1768429843
