john-versteegh-gheisa
John Versteegh - Geisha

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism. The female figure is central to John Versteegh's artistic production. Women are his favorite subjects, reworked in different contexts depending on the artist's inspiration.

In this work, artist John Verleegh draws inspiration from Japanese influences, not only in the subject (a delicate geisha figure) but also in the formal approach. Indeed, the work, though contemporary, reflects traditional Japanese artistic practice. The appearance is reminiscent of ancient prints, and we can recognize some of their characteristic features. First and foremost, the space, which is based not on a perspective construction but rather on the superimposition of elements. Furthermore, the calligraphic manner of describing objects is typical, with a subtle drawing and a dematerialization of volumes. Everything appears essentially two-dimensional and light, as in the finest Japanese pictorial tradition. However, there are elements in this work that are more markedly contemporary. Specifically, a more pronounced abstraction of the elements, as well as the use of bright, almost electric colors, in a marked pop style.

Artist John Versteegh is known for his evocative paintings inspired by the female universe. His paintings display a wide variety of inspirations and influences, although his style can generally be traced back to a pop-inspired hyperrealism.
