josip-pintaric-puco-i-vasai
Josip Pintaric Puco - The Potters

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. Artist Josip Pintaric, a leading exponent of the Croatian naive movement, focuses his research on the most typical subjects of that movement: country life, rural landscapes, and animal figures.

This beautiful work is highly representative of Josip Pintaric's artistic vision and his understanding of naive aesthetics. As we can see, the naive artist deals with simple subjects (such as country life) in a simplified representation of the world, aimed at extolling primary values of purity. Thus, the simplicity and ingenuity innate in an artist like Pintaric are spontaneous but, at the same time, differentiate themselves from amateurism through the achievement of a refined and complex formal style. This is particularly evident in the Croatian painter, who recalls another very important naive painter, the "Douanier" Rousseau, in simplifying reality into a pronounced and illusionistic hyperrealism. Nature, thus, takes on exotic and fairy-tale connotations, and even the lives of humble artisans are transformed into a magical episode. To achieve this poetics, Josip Pintaric pays attention to every detail of the drawing, and the entire representation is the result of a complex system of arabesque lines. Color also plays its part in the choice of soft opalescent shades.

Josip Pintaric Puco was born in 1927 in Nova Gradiska, Croatia.
