kalchschmidt-senza-titolo-3
Emilio Kalchschmidt - Untitled

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation only starting in the 19th century. This type of subject, and specifically the city of Paris, consistently reflects the inclinations of the painter Emilio Kalchschmidt, whose artistic career is closely linked to Impressionism. Urban landscapes and scenes of city life are, in fact, typical themes of that pictorial movement, which originated and developed in the French capital. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the aspects of modernity represented by landscape: the frenzy of the city, the crowds, the traffic, and the typically bourgeois settings. In Kalchschmidt, however, a more subdued dimension of picturesque views prevails, in which the human presence is not highlighted.

Emilio Kalchschmidt's painting style draws directly from the Impressionist tradition of urban landscapes, taking it to its extreme. Formally, he uses a hatching technique, but does so with a very thick and dense brushstroke, which helps him achieve a remarkable synthesis of forms. All the objects in the painting are rendered with a mosaic of multicolored brushstrokes, providing an even more immediate and fleeting representation. In this way, as in Impressionism, the painted surface is designed to capture every subtle vibration of light and atmosphere, but it does so within an even more dynamic and colorful compositional economy. This type of color synthesis essentially brings Kalchschmidt's painting style closer to an expressionist and more contemporary conception of his language.

Emilio Kalchschmidt was a Novara painter born in 1902 and died in 1983. He was an important painter of urban landscapes, but is also remembered as an illustrator and caricaturist. In 1938, he participated in the Società per le Belle Arti ed Esposizione Permanente exhibition in Milan, displaying the paintings "Ponte Sesto" and "Paesaggio."
