karl-lagasse-lord
Karl Lagasse - Lord

The work draws on a pop aesthetic in the sense of its use of a popular media language. In this case, the style of this piece is also attributable to the street art subculture and various forms of urban art. Street art, generally associated with punk or hip-hop music, is often seen as a means of protest against consumerist society or the rights denied to minorities. Thus, a double bond is established, typical of pop aesthetics, which consists of elevating a product of popular culture to the rank of a true work of art and, at the same time, transforming the artwork into something absolutely simple and immediate, such as the language of murals. In this work, Karl Lagasse creates a direct, ironic, and playful image, inspired by graffiti.

In this painting, too, Karl Lagasse demonstrates a remarkable pictorial sensibility inspired by pop art. The connection to urban and graffiti culture is very pronounced, in the rebellious, ironic, slightly kitsch spirit and direct language that underpins his work. Formally, however, the use of acrylics translates into a decidedly painterly gesture, revealing a strong connection to the Expressionist and Abstract movements. This is confirmed by the use of color, which displays a harmonious chromatic balance.

Acclaimed artist Karl Lagasse rose to prominence in 2009 with his “One Dollar” sculptures. Karl began his artistic journey with collages when he was 7 years old. That same year, he met French artist César Baldaccini, who inspired Karl to continue developing his work. He ventured into the Paris subway, where tagging and graffiti became his predominant creative medium. However, his collages remained his true passion. His first solo exhibition featuring his “Building” sculptures was in 2006 at the Isy Brachot Gallery in Brussels. Karl has exhibited his work worldwide, including: Art Monaco 2011 with the Bel Air Fine Art gallery; a 2012 solo exhibition with the Artco France gallery; and in 2016, he inaugurated the Gallery Atrium in Marbella, Spain. In 2017 and 2018, the American Film Festival of Deauville chose Karl Lagasse to create its trophy.
