karl-weysser-veduta-cittadina-tedesca
Karl Weysser - German City View

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It is worth remembering that immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. The landscape conceived by the German painter Karl Weysser, on the other hand, is linked to the "Vedutism" tradition. His pictorial production, in fact, is distinguished by objective representations of cities, in rationally structured compositions in which sensory data is captured with absolute fidelity.

German artist Karl Weysser specializes in cityscapes and small country villages. His exquisitely figurative language is nourished by a precise recording of sensory data, in views rationally arranged according to a regular perspective grid of classical tradition. Simply put, Karl Weysser's artistic practice is heir to Vedutismo, of which he is an extraordinary interpreter in the objective, almost scientific, representation of sensory data. We can indeed observe how, thanks to an extraordinary technique, Weysser is able to clearly depict every detail of the landscape and insert all the elements into a concrete space. Furthermore, it is a lively representation, thanks to the dynamic application of color, which lends freshness to the execution. From this perspective, his use of light is extraordinary, not only in the evocative direction of shadows, but also and above all in unifying the entire space of the work in the coherent and unique atmosphere of a clear, sunny day.

The work has been attributed to Karl Weysser, a German painter born in Durlach in 1833 and who died in Heidelberg in 1904. In 1855, he began studying art at the newly founded Grand Ducal Art School in Baden in Karlsruhe, after completing his mathematical and technical studies. After preparatory courses, Weysser specialized in architecture and landscape painting with Wilhelm Schirmer and, after his death, with Hans Gude. Weysser completed his training in 1865, with two stays in Munich and other travels. He then settled in Karlsruhe. In 1873, he went to Düsseldorf, where he remained until 1875 and lived with the painter Karl Ludwig Friedrich Wagner. From 1880 to 1884, he lived in Heidelberg. His artistic oeuvre includes approximately 600 paintings and oil studies, as well as more than 3,000 architectural drawings. Due to his frequent changes of residence and extensive travels through Baden, the Moselle, South Tyrol, and Alsace, his subjects span a wide regional spectrum. His main motifs are cityscapes of small towns, which, thanks to their realistic depiction, are now used as sources for historical images.
