kino-mistral-in-crociera
Kino Mistral - On a Cruise

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones. This work by Kino Mistral depicts a mundane scene of bourgeois extraction. The scene seems inspired by the aristocratic and refined atmosphere of Art Deco and the statuesque figures of the painter Tamara de Lempicka.

Kino Mistral's language is based, first and foremost, on a pronounced objectivity that plastically enhances her subjects and emphasizes their contours, clearly separating them from the space. Color is distributed in compact chromatic zones, and the space is devoid of atmospherics. It is a language suited to surreal compositions, in line with the tradition of the historical avant-garde and similar to movements such as Italian Magic Realism or German New Objectivity. Kino Mistral is no exception in the complexity and eccentricity of her themes, which, moreover, are modulated according to different tendencies. In some cases, the deformation of bodies prevails; in others, as in this work, a more pronounced geometricization leads to a true cubist decomposition.

Kino Mistral was born in Milan. He attended the Leonardo Da Vinci scientific high school, then the Faculty of Architecture. At the same time, he devoted himself to painting and experimented with kinetic art and sculpture. He developed a passion for ethnic sculpture and exotic art, which he also studied during his travels around the world. He then lived in New York, where he also met Andy Warhol and Bob Rauschenberg. Upon returning to Italy, he married in Palermo, where he fell in love with the people and colors of Sicily. He lives there most of the year, dividing the rest of his time between Milan and Tuscany. In the 1990s and early 2000s, he received several awards throughout Italy and participated in numerous art events.
