longaretti-figura-donna
Trento Longaretti - Female Figure

The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

Trento Longaretti, in his career as a painter, was one of the most moving interpreters of the war and post-war period. Longaretti focused primarily on the persecution of the Jewish people, whom he always depicted with figures of wayfarers, eternally on the move, homeless people searching for a place to rest. These are powerfully symbolic figures (for this reason, almost decontextualized, so as to assume a more generic character) that point the finger at any kind of persecution or discrimination. Formally, as already mentioned, Longaretti focuses on a generic representation, and in this he is supported by the remarkable capacity for synthesis that his pictorial language allows. The figures are delineated with a few touches of pure color, in a physiognomic reduction that corresponds to a greater expressive vigor.

Trento Longaretti was born in Treviglio in 1916 and passed away in Bergamo in 2017. He initially trained at the Brera Academy, but was forced to leave in 1939 to fulfill his wartime duties. The Second World War left an indelible mark on his artistic career. After the war, he was able to fully resume his painting career, frequently dedicating himself to frescoes, stained glass, and mosaics. He participated several times in the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial. Stylistically, he is an artist who belongs to the Corrente group, along with Guttuso, Sassu, and Vedova.
