lorenzo-dandrea-senza-titolo
Lorenzo D'Andrea - Untitled

In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to depict an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In Lorenzo D'Andrea's paintings, abstract and figurative blend almost seamlessly.

As we can see from this work, Lorenzo D'Andrea's starting point is tangible reality, leaving visible traces of it in his work, albeit in a surreal and distorted interpretation, which allows him to subvert every rule of space and time. D'Andrea's experimental approach, however, is expressed primarily formally; indeed, his language reflects various aesthetic influences of contemporary art. First and foremost, the expressionist synthesis of his subjects, stripped to the essential by a nervous style that simplifies their forms with a frenetic rhythm. In terms of color, the artist draws on an almost exaggerated gesturality, dictated by his almost uncontainable creativity. Finally, chromatically, D'Andrea favors a palette consistent with the expressionism of his style: the colors are electric and acidic, almost pop in their provocation.

Lorenzo D'Andrea is a painter and sculptor. Born in Lucca in 1943, he studied at the Liceo Artistico in Carrara and then at the Polytechnic University of Milan. He began exhibiting in 1961. His works are exhibited in galleries and museums in Milan, Rome, Amsterdam, Paris, Lucerne, Bonn, Krakow, and Nice. His portraits are renowned: he has painted those of Saint John Paul II, Pope Francis, Giulio Andreotti, Andrea Bocelli, Renato Guttuso, Gerry Scotti, and Pietro Cascella. His monumental sculptures are exhibited in Lido di Camaiore, Sondrio, Portofino, Olbia, and Golfo Aranci. Until the 1970s, D'Andrea engaged in figurative research of an expressionist-informal nature: in a vibrantly colored, dense, and textured painting style, figures pile up one on top of another, resembling stele statues, which seem to blend the influence of Picasso with certain medieval art from the Lucca area, the painter's homeland. Starting in 1977, D'Andrea will take a path that will lead him to very different outcomes.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/IMG_4711_f3ed908a-5206-4377-b830-33790a552785.jpg?v=1768473094
