Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.

The human figure is always central to Lorenzo Tornabuoni's artistic production. His interpretation, however, always tends toward a refined aesthetic. This aesthetic is constructed with anti-naturalistic constraints, exerted with the aim of heightening the figure's expressionism. Thus, as we can see in this work, the human body, for Tornabuoni, becomes almost a cocoon, a pure form to be molded, with little characterization in its physical and aesthetic details. Its aesthetic value is therefore to be found in the elegance of its contours and in the painterly quality (a constant in Tornabuoni) that enlivens its surface with transparent glazes. Consequently, the color palette is always complex, constructed with often exaggerated hues.

A Roman artist born in 1934, Lorenzo Tornabuoni's artistic career began in the 1960s, exhibiting in various galleries.
