luciano-minguzzi-la-fortuna-6-2
Luciano Minguzzi - Fortune

In the history of art, a clear distinction can often be made between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but, at the same time, is charged with hidden and symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In this bas-relief sculpture, Luciano Minguzzi draws inspiration from various elements that are part of the symbolic iconography of "fortune," such as the character
which falls (a symbol of the transience and temporariness of fortune) or the cornucopia but inserts them in a composition so abstract as to almost touch an informal register.

This work is highly significant for the expressive and formal freedom that characterizes the work of artist Luciano Minguzzi. The composition is completely free, organized within an extremely complex space that leaves the viewer with no reference point. Within this elaborate and chaotic surface, the theme of "luck" is developed with direct references drawn from traditional symbolism, yet recontextualized in a completely new context, the brainchild of the artist. Of particular note is the technique with which Minguzzi, within the limited surface of the bas-relief, elaborately works the forms. There is a remarkable manipulation of the material, which characterizes the volumes of varying consistencies, clearly communicating the dimension of a decidedly gestural sculptural practice. The artist shapes the square space of the panel with his hands, directly creating, along with the images, strong emotional tensions arising from his contact with the material.

Luciano Minguzzi was the most important Bolognese sculptor of the twentieth century. Born in 1911 and died in 2004, he initially trained at the Academy of his city, and later, thanks to a scholarship, he spent time in Paris and London. By 1933, he had already won his first prize at the Rome Quadrennial. After the war, he created the important Monument to the Partisans at Porta Lame in Bologna.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/IMG_0088_81c30419-4afb-43a9-8c64-c008c977aac8.jpg?v=1768429004
