The various variations of this iconographic model depend on the inclusion of additional figures who are related to Jesus, such as Saint Anne, mother of Mary, or the young Saint John, often included with a prophetic function of Christ's Passion.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eGiuseppe Pavone is a master of terracotta relief sculpture, creating interpretations of famous works (especially his adaptations of Caravaggio) and sacred art subjects. In the latter, as in the present work, we note a more pronounced tendency toward abstraction, in a synthesis of forms that takes on a specifically sacred and spiritual character. The simplicity of the design harks back to ancient Byzantine icons, which, through abstraction, exalted the sacred nature of the figures. In Pavone's case, the simplicity of the lines creates a more regular design, characterized by the movement in the folds of the ample draperies. The warm color palette, well-suited to the clay, is typical.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n\u003cp\u003e Giuseppe Pavone was born in Taranto in 1950. He was a professor of visual arts at the Luigi Russo State Art Institute in Monopoli. He lives and works in Monopoli at Via Eugenio Montale, 16.
