Compositionally, we can see how, in keeping with a typically 17th-century conception harking back to the great naturalism of the Renaissance, the subject is exalted in monumental plasticity. Specifically Baroque, however, is the artist's emphasis on the ample drapes of Mary's robe, which swell her forms in an extremely dynamic and flowing compositional rhythm. The complex twists of the figures also follow the same dynamism, in a theatrical tension pushed almost to the limit, which is, again, typical of the Baroque spirit. Furthermore, from an executional perspective, we can see how the artist is perfectly in line with the pictorial methods in vogue between the 17th and 18th centuries, in the sense of a highly atmospheric, almost synthetic, rendering in some passages, with a strong emphasis on sfumato.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\n \u003cp\u003eThe work has been attributed to a 17th-century artist from Campania.
