manlio-amedeo-senza-titolo
Manlio Amodeo - Untitled

Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s, encompassing all fields of artistic research. Specifically, in the visual arts, Surrealism sought to explore the human subconscious and translate it into artwork through a mechanical writing process based on dream analysis. Consequently, Surrealist artworks propose the representation of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a hyperrealistic formal rendering, precisely to paradoxically accentuate the illusory and ambiguous nature of the surreal dimension.

Manlio Amodeo's compositions are formally grounded in a fascinating architectural rationalism, rigorous in its geometry. This, or rather, this ostentatious rational component, could lead one to classify Manlio Amodeo's work within the metaphysical realm. However, his constructions are taken to a decidedly surrealist excess. The buildings inhabit their own spatial-temporal laws, presenting themselves in paradoxical and absurd ways. The inspiration from Escher's enigmatic graphics is evident, although Amodeo displays a stronger inclination toward geometry and three-dimensionality. Furthermore, in much of his work, compared to the Dutch master, Manlio Amodeo prefers a complex polychrome balance to the two-tone black and white, as we can also appreciate in this work.

Manlio Amodeo was born in Turin, where he trained at the Vittorio Veneto Institute and Armando Testa's advertising courses. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts and began his partnership with Savina Tavano, whom he married in 1960. He created illustrations for SEI and Arnoldo Mondadori Editore. In 1963, he worked for Sansoni in Florence. In 1966, he moved to Rome, becoming a full-time artist, purchasing a star-shaped lithographic press with which he produced very small print runs. He has had major solo exhibitions throughout Italy.
