manlio-sarra-astratto
Manlio Sarra - Abstract

The work is an abstract composition. "Abstract" derives from the Latin term "abstrahere," which means to extract or draw out. The process of abstraction, in fact, consists of eliminating the particular and individual aspects of an object to derive a universal concept. From Kandinsky to Mondrian, from Pollock to Mirò, many painters have pushed the process of abstraction to the limit in their works, paradoxically creating pure forms and colors that do not exist in nature, or translating their emotions and instincts into images.

Manlio Sarra's pictorial language aims to transfigure phenomenal reality into a system of pure lines, shapes, and colors. The shapes, in particular, dictate the compositional rhythm of the work, with their overlapping and movement in space. In this way, they leave a trace, a residual connection with the perceptible world, and at the same time, divide the surface of the painting into zones. These zones are covered by solid color and bright, contrasting hues. Manlio Sarra's style demonstrates a strong connection to the playfulness of Paul Klee's magic squares and, at the same time, the rationality of Mondrian's neoconstructivism.

Manlio Sarra (Monte San Giovanni Campano, 1909 – Rome, 1986) was an Italian painter. He participated in international exhibitions, including the XXVIII Venice Biennale and all the Roman Quadrennials held from 1947 to 1965. After 1945, he held several solo exhibitions in major Italian cities—Rome, Turin, and Milan—as well as in the United States, Switzerland, France, England, and Japan.
