manuel-campus-senza-titolo-12-2
Manuel Campus - Untitled

Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. With the development of Symbolist and Expressionist movements between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the figure of the acrobat, circus artist, or mask began to gain popularity, as it served a vital role in the development of complex iconographies with hidden and mysterious meanings. Examples include the figures of artists and harlequins immortalized by Picasso during his "blue" and "rose" periods. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their attention primarily on the figure of the clown. Manuel Campus continues this trend, reclaiming the underlying and allusive magic inherent in enigmatic clown figures.

Manuel Campus's art is characterized by expressive faces, strong personalities, and popular features. The painter has succeeded in creating his own poetics from the grim stares and frowning faces. These are the rugged faces of social outcasts, but Campus sublimates them with his own expressionistic interpretation. The artist implements a process of formal synthesis based on a linear rhythm of composition. The plasticity is very pronounced, creating an almost caricatural definition of the facial features. Manuel Campus's compositions are characterized by a distinctive palette, always featuring a color palette of brown tones that evoke a lived-in feel.

Manuel Campus is an artist of Sardinian origin, born in Domus De Maria in 1928, but lives and works in Bazzano Inferiore, near Spoleto.
