marco-dolfi-composizione-gerani
Marco Dolfi - Geranium Composition

Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.

The floral works demonstrate Marco Dolfi's ability to impeccably convey reality into his artwork. Due to their extraordinary objective rendering, the works almost resemble illustrations used in the classification and study of various botanical species. The beauty of this series lies in the precision, almost scientific, with which the subject is rendered. The drawing demonstrates extraordinary technical skill in capturing the image in every minute detail with a noble naturalistic intent. However, the application of color adds further value to the execution of the work, in that the didactic perfection is tempered by the very light washes of diluted paint and the rapid strokes. In this way, the work acquires greater immediacy and freshness of execution, and the scientific precision of the representation comes to life thanks to the painter's touch. The choice of color palette, simultaneously delicate and luminous, is truly remarkable.

Marco Dolfi was born in Viareggio in 1953.
