mariano-parisi-rioma-la-rinascita
Mariano Parisi (Rioma) - The rebirth

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Mariano Parisi's interpretation of landscape is the fruit of the distinctly Expressionist inspiration of his pictorial practice. Mariano Parisi's landscape is therefore synthetic and abstract, a place where it is not the sensory naturalistic elements that prevail, but the emotional and spiritual elements of interiority.

Stylistically, it's clear that Mariano Parisi has achieved, in his painting, a post-Impressionist maturity that leads him to a Symbolist/Expressionist interpretation of reality. The composition, then, is entirely constructed through color, and the brushstrokes have a notable structural value. The painter's aim, therefore, is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, which, despite the essentiality of the representation, breaks down the space into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life on the subject. Thus, on a substantially two-dimensional surface, squashed in the foreground, the objects are constructed by the artist through thick, dense brushstrokes. In this particular work, we can see how Mariano Parisi uses an even more substantial brushstroke that distributes the color almost in relief. The very thick impastos reveal a certain resemblance to Vincent Van Gogh's pictorial style, as do the agitated and swirling gestures, which seek to evoke an earthly spirituality, reminiscent of the Dutch master. The choice of a color palette that almost completely transcends phenomenal reality, adopting almost aggressive tones, fully in line with an Expressionist poetics, also points in the same direction.

Mariano Parisi, known professionally as Rioma, was born in Sicily in 1948 and spent most of his career in Milan.
