mario-berrino-giardini-alle-mauritius
Mario Berrino - Gardens in Mauritius

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. In Mario Berrino's works, the subject is often a landscape where flowers and their colors take center stage. This type of floral view allows the Alassio master to unleash his full chromatic flair in a composition in which an Impressionist stylistic register is taken to its extreme.

In this work, we can see the extraordinary technical prowess of Mario Berrino's artistic process. In his more impressionistic paintings, the entire structure is determined by an extremely complex hatching technique that gives shape to objects, creates volumes, and measures space. The result is a composition that, in addition to demonstrating great drawing skill, captures the vibrations of light on objects and their interaction with the atmosphere. However, the defining characteristic of Mario Berrino's works is the leading role played by color. Indeed, the Alassio painter's research has always focused on developing a precious, brilliant, and luminous polychrome. The entire painting, therefore, is characterized by a dynamic and iridescent surface. For it is essentially in color that Mario Berrino finds his lifeblood, in his ability to create luminous and dynamic chromatic impastos.

Mario Berrino was a painter and a prominent figure from Alassio. Born in 1920, he died in 2011. Besides being an artist, he was also a tireless promoter of initiatives. It is worth remembering that, from an idea he had, together with the writer Ernest Hemingway, created the famous Muretto d'Alassio in 1953. From 1976 onwards, he devoted himself entirely to painting. His paintings are permanently exhibited in two galleries dedicated to him, one in Alassio and one in Monte Carlo.
