However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. In this sculpture, Mario Ceroli approaches a symbolist language in depicting a figure reaching out toward dreams and hopes for the future, part of a series of works created in 2001 to celebrate the third millennium.

In this sculpture, Mario Ceroli plays with his own artistic language. The production method that best represents him—the three-dimensional wooden silhouette—is transferred to a different process, namely lost-wax bronze casting. The sculpture was crafted as if it were wood, aiming to achieve those primary values, close to Arte Povera, that underpin Ceroli's artistic practice. Thus, the composition is powerfully symbolic in its essentiality, built on harmonious curvilinear movements. We can recognize the mastery of the sculptor Mario Ceroli in his ability to convey a simultaneously spiritual and dynamic tension, despite the simple and extremely concise lines that compose the figure. The figure's spirituality is heightened by the presence of dynamic lines, which further underscore the concept of striving toward the future.

Mario Ceroli was born in Castel Frentano in 1938. He is one of the most important contemporary artists and set designers. He trained in Rome under Leoncillo, Pericle Fazzini, and Ettore Colla. In the late 1950s, he discovered wood, which would become his preferred material for artistic production. In the 1960s, fascinated by Pop art, he began producing the serialized silhouettes that became his trademark. In 1966, he won an award at the Venice Biennale. In 1967 and 1968, he participated in the Arte Povera exhibitions. He also worked extensively as a set designer, collaborating primarily with the Teatro Stabile di Torino.
