mario-pinozzo-pagliaccio
Mario Pinizzotto - Clown

The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.

Always fascinated by unusual and enigmatic subjects, the composition of this masked figure is typical of Mario Pinizzotto's oeuvre. Formally, his distinctive characteristic is constructing the composition's framework with a thin black line. This graphic line makes the subjects vibrant while simultaneously highlighting their volumes and features in a highly distinctive, almost expressionistic manner. The painter distributes the paint over this framework: in this work, Pinizzotto finds himself experimenting with a quasi-explosion of diluted color, through which he interprets the clown's costume with lively pictorial gestures.

Mario Pinizzotto was born in Rome in 1929. He trained in Paris, where he attended the Academy of Fine Arts. He was assistant set designer at the Stadttheater in Zurich and artistic director at Art Studios ADAG in Lugano.
