The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. Artist Mario Tosi's favorite subject is the landscape along the shores of Lake Garda. However, he has developed his own approach to landscape painting, in which the real dimension blends, almost seamlessly, with a magical reinterpretation of the world.

Mario Tosi's landscape work represents a meeting of the tangible and the spiritual dimension of emotion. Indeed, his compositions necessarily begin with naturalistic data, which are reproduced in the painting with considerable precision, yet everything is transfigured into a magical world created by the painter's sensitivity. This transformation occurs essentially on a formal level, where the naturalistic description undergoes slight distortions to introduce the artist's most intimate perception into the landscape. Thus, the interpretation of pictorial space becomes arbitrary, and the elements seem to be arranged in an impossible manner, overlapping in a play of transparencies. Tosi's refined brushwork, which manifests itself in very light glazes, contributes to this effect. Furthermore, with his brushstrokes, the artist is capable of creating sulfurous and vaporous effects that give the landscape the appearance of a true vision. The transfiguration of the landscape into this magical dimension is completed by the accentuated polychromy of Tosi's works, always constructed on a delicate balance of colors that transcend the naturalistic element.

Mario Tosi is an artist born in Cavriana who lives and works in Peschiera del Garda.
