michele-cascella-portofino-estivo
Michele Cascella - Summer Portofino

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and Early Modern periods, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings. In Michele Cascella's artistic production, in addition to polychrome landscapes featuring flowers, another highly developed subject is the city, Paris or Portofino in particular. In this context, too, the artist draws on the Impressionist tradition of the veduta, which celebrates the vibrancy of bourgeois life.

Even in this silkscreen, we can see the extraordinary technical prowess of Michele Cascella's art. The entire structure of this work is determined by an extremely complex graphic style that depicts the buildings, the surrounding landscape, and the characters moving within them with great freshness and immediacy of execution. This graphic style creates a complex hatching within the composition, useful for identifying the interactions of objects in space and their existential vibrations. This type of composition, therefore, enhances the hustle and bustle of city life with a lively technique. As in all of Cascella's work, there is no shortage of color, in this case expressed by the vibrant polychromy suggested by the myriad of boats that enliven the dock.

Michele Cascella (Ortona 1892 - Milan 1989). A painter with a remarkable career, his works are exhibited in important museums both in Italy and abroad. He experimented with numerous techniques, but his greatest achievements were with his floral subjects. Cascella's style of painting is both investigation and a precious lyricism of color. He remains faithful to a naturalistic approach, but his technique is dedicated to capturing all the chromatic and luminous vibrations of the floral world in his paintings.
