The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The work highlights Michele Dixitdomino's post-Impressionist maturity. The composition is compressed entirely into the foreground, allowing no spatial depth. The painter's aim is not to capture the sensory aspect of the landscape, but to capture its very essence, its substance. To this end, the brushstroke, rich in texture, intervenes, fleshing out the objects, breaking them down into different planes, recording the vibrations of light and life within them. The sensory aspect, therefore, is completely transcended in a complex conception of pictorial practice in which the artist's gestures themselves play a fundamental role. In Michele Dixitdomino's landscape paintings, the objects are constructed by the painter with broad, dense brushstrokes, and the houses are structured according to geometric principles inspired by Cézanne. Chromatically, the entire surface of the work is coordinated with a balanced palette of references and correspondences.

Born in Palermo in 1908, Michele Dixitdomino (Dixit) began exhibiting in 1931 after graduating from the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo; after 1932 he participated in all the Trade Union Exhibitions and in 1942 in the XXII Venice Biennale; he taught at the Academy of Palermo from 1937 to 1977.
