The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

While the final result of Michele Roccotelli's works can be described as Informal, we find ourselves faced with a painter closely tied to the sensitive reality of his homeland, Puglia. Indeed, Roccotelli's starting point in developing his paintings is Nature itself. The artist focuses on the study of cultivated fields, focusing on specific details in the execution of the work with the intent of translating their true essence to the canvas. Michele Roccotelli's approach somehow resembles the exponents of the "Last Naturalism" movement, who macroscopically enlarged plant elements, thus arriving at Informalism. This influence is elaborated by Michele Roccotelli along with his agitated gestures, which hark back to Abstract Expressionism. Indeed, the gestural brushstrokes and the pictorial material itself become the primary expressive medium in conveying the artist's sensitivity and perception of Nature to the work.

Michele Roccotelli (Minervino Murge, 1946) studied art in Bari, where he furthered his studies in Rome.
