michele-salemi-senza-titolo
Michele Salemi - Untitled

The work can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered equally important as historical or religious ones. The Impressionists, in particular, favored subjects related to modern life in urban, bourgeois settings. In Michele Salemi's Expressionist interpretation, the genre scene is aimed at investigating, along the lines of existentialism and the analysis of human relationships, a bourgeois world, captured in the daily routine of its gestures and rituals.

The style of artist Michele Salemi, both in his still lifes and in his works featuring the human figure, is characterized by a vehement expressionist intensity. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its emotional states to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of figures, through a highly nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism, such as Fauvism and, above all, the Die Brucke movement in Germany, to which Salemi seems to draw most. Indeed, the main characteristic of his language, besides the extreme synthesis of the subject, is the broken and angular rhythm of the composition, constructed through oblique lines. However, compared to German masters such as Kirchner or Nolde, with their bold lines and compact fields of color, Salemi seems to favor a lighter form. His figures, shattered by the broken lines of the compositions, also seem to dematerialize. This sensation is fueled by a very dynamic, almost gestural style and a palette of soft, light colours.

Michele Salemi was an artist born in Brindisi in 1942. He trained in Bologna under Pompilio Mandelli. His painting, characterized by an exuberant chromatic energy, fades over time while maintaining intact its will, confidence, and strength, simultaneously retaining the memory of the greatest twentieth-century Italian and European painters. Considered one of the greatest painters of our time working in the Emilia region, Michele Salemi boasts a rich curriculum of important exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Michele Salemi passed away in Bologna in 2013.
