However, when an artist's goal is to represent an object that resonates with phenomenal reality but is also charged with hidden and symbolic meaning, this boundary can become blurred. Symbolism and Expressionism are emblematic stylistic movements in their conceptual interpretation of reality, with an iconic rendering of images and a symbolic interpretation in the use of color. In the artistic production of Mirko Pagliacci, one of the most important exponents of Metropolism, different styles blend, integrating figurative references with expressive media that even hint at Informalism.

The artistic movement of Metropolism, born between the late 1980s and early 1990s, coinciding with the Transavanguardia, advocated a return to traditional painting media and a deeper exploration of content. In this regard, Mirko Pagliacci's works propose a reflection on time, conceiving extremely complex compositions based on a transcultural syncretism. In Mirko Pagliacci's work, post-archaeological elements blend with contemporary images. This is achieved through a fusion of styles, where the archaeological find, reproduced almost as a readymade, is combined with an informal elaboration of compositional space, where the pictorial gesture coexists with the sign and the writing. In this case, however, the work offers an almost surreal scene, where the dimension, outside of time and space, is delineated through a decidedly expressionist technique, very close to the aesthetic advocated by the Transavanguardia. The characters are depicted as dark shadows in a space constructed by the painter's agitated gestures. The diagonal brushstrokes and dynamic lines that mark the scene leverage the expressive potential of color.

Mirko Pagliacci was born in Lausanne in 1959. He then studied at the Scuola di Nudo of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome with Antonio Avenessian and Giulio Turcato. In 2000, he joined the Metropolismo movement, theorized by Achille Bonito Oliva. He lives and works between Rome and Castiglione del Lago, in Umbria. Among his most notable works are an installation for the MAAM Museum and a piece for the Insieme project, exhibited at the Michelangelo Pistoletto Foundation.
