nina-ubaldi-paesaggio-marino
Nina Ubaldi - Seascape

The "Still Life" genre emerged in the early 17th century. It consists of the depiction of compositions of inanimate subjects, most often flowers or fruit. While initially it was an opportunity for painters to experiment with a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art the "Still Life" also became a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as happened, for example, in the Cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the in-depth exploration of objects was aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the mere sensory element. In the present work, the artist proposes the subject of a still life with fish, a composition in which, instead of fruit, marine fauna predominates, often placed on the seashore. A painter famous for executing this type of subject was, for example, Filippo De Pisis.

In her works, artist Nina Ubaldi demonstrates her research toward a representation of reality transfigured into the fleeting dimension of time and memory. Thus, objects almost lose their physical consistency, and the perceptible element is reduced to a few faded traces. Everything, both the subjects and the space, is composed of an ethereal and elusive substance, devoid of any real substance on a two-dimensional surface. The subjects are constructed from an uncertain outline that delineates their forms, drawn with bold black and white lines. Within, the very substance of the objects blends with the seascape in the background, becoming one with the space. The latter, in turn, is achieved through light brushstrokes, almost transparent in the fleeting essence of reality transfigured into memory. Even the color palette, based on a palette of grays, expresses a sense of insubstantiality and ineffability.

Artist Nina Ubaldi stands out for a painting style that takes the prerogatives of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism to their extreme. In a swift and immediate style, the artist definitively transcends the sensory to transfer the representation of reality into the realm of the intellect, memory, and recollection. In this research, Nina Ubaldi demonstrates that she has fully embraced the lessons of an artist like Filippo De Pisis, who was inspired by the same principles.
