nino-ronca-prime-luci-un-vicolo
Nino Ronca - First Lights of an Alley

The urban landscape was already a popular subject in the Middle Ages and the Modern Era, but predominantly in an idealized manner. Scenes of city life became typical themes with a more realistic interpretation starting in the 19th century. It's worth remembering how, immediately following the realist movements of the 19th century, the Impressionists also placed great emphasis on the everyday, on everyday life, with a certain predilection, however, for the frenetic pace of the city, its crowds, traffic, and typically bourgeois settings.

The painting displays high pictorial quality in a composition that tends to be expressionist. The entire scene is compressed and squashed, with a completely irrational conception of space. Formally, the buildings are formed by a tormented brushstroke. Between them, a sliver of light appears, seemingly bisecting the composition. In the background, the outline of a dome appears out of nowhere. A rather arbitrary interpretation of reality, therefore, that has the merit of depicting a scene with great expressive force.

Nino Ronca was born in Molfetta in 1937.
