The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century; and finally with the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This work is part of a series in which Penner demonstrates his penchant for playful compositions. The anecdotal subject, drawn from reality, undergoes a process of expressionist transfiguration, predominantly through geometric figures. The fluid, arabesque-like graphic line leads to a rationalization with fairytale-like, almost surreal overtones. The influence of Paul Klee is also evident, especially in the fairytale-like quality of the subjects.
