peppino-casanova-senza-titolo-3
Peppino Casanova - Untitled

The clown was a popular subject among genre painters of the 1970s and 1980s. Many artists dedicated much of their careers to depicting this theme, Romano Mussolini being a prime example. Typically, the interpretation of this subject is similar for all artists who attempt it: the clown appears with his makeup designed to evoke laughter and hilarity, but instead displays a melancholic expression. This contrast is intended to spark an empathetic dialogue with the viewer. The clown has also been favored by many painters for another formal reason. Indeed, his flamboyant makeup and colorful clothing offer painters a pretext for creating original color harmonies.

The style of painter Peppino Casanova, in much of his work, is characterized by the development of a strongly expressionist language. The artist seeks to go beyond what is perceived by the senses to extrapolate the true essence of reality and communicate it on canvas in a lively and emotional manner. For this reason, through the application of color, he develops a highly synthesised process that reduces subjects to dense, material layers of paint, in which the painter's ego also plays a central role, conveyed through his gestures, even brutal ones, as in this case. All these elements together constitute the expressionistic power of Peppino Casanova's painting. In this work in particular, the artist feels the need to dirty the canvas in an instinctive conception of artistic gesture that draws on the masters of American Abstract Expressionism.

Giuseppe (Peppino) Casanova was born in 1937 in Vasto, where he still lives. He has dedicated his entire artistic life to painting, having held numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. Peppino is a painter who trained in avant-garde art in the 1950s. The influence of Abstract Expressionist techniques is particularly evident in his work. From the 1960s, Peppino regularly frequented the "Mitica" Petite Galerie in Vasto, conceived and organized by Lello Martone. He has exhibited in America, in Philadelphia. In Italy, he has held more than ten solo exhibitions in: Foggia, at the Palazzetto dell'arte by invitation of the municipality; Chieti, art workshop; Vasto, over ten solo exhibitions; and Sulmona, where he has participated in the Sulmona Prize several times. His paintings are held in private collections in Italy and abroad.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0909/7065/3058/files/senza-titolo-Peppino-Casanova-scaled.jpg?v=1768471915
